RULE: Give 30″ to 36″ of a walkway between large furniture pieces if not then at least 18″-24″.

We’ll start with a bit of a metaphor. So, let’s say you’re sitting on a flight and the flight attendant pushes the tiny little cart up your aisle basically jumping every single sleeping shoulder on her up. It’s actually not the flight attendants fault but the lack of space is the answer. Don’t let your dining room be that aisle.

RULE: Give about 24″ of space per person for maximum comfort and food enjoyment.

Following the rule above, let your dining room have the space it needs. Establish that your dining room table isn’t the cafeteria anymore where you barely have the space to move your arms. Give your loved one space to sit comfortably on their sit.

RULE: Chairs should be able to slide under the table with ease with or without arms. Just for your reference dining chair seats are usually 18″-19″ high and dining tables are typically 30″ high.

We all know how uncomfortable chairs can be right. So give your guests the right and most comfortable way of seating – not only will they won’t want to leave but they will be showering you with compliments of your dining room chairs. This rule will help you in several ways you can’t imagine. Such as flow when the chairs are empty and you need to move around the table, but it also helps those that need to pull their chair in (little kids) easier accessibility to the table when they are eating.

RULE: The back height of your chair should be similar in scale to your table. For example, if you have a small round 36″ table you should stay away from a super large scale 4′ tall dining chair because it’s going to look really off.

This one depends on where you want your dining room decor to go. As it can be broken for a stylish reason, it can be a good choice or a devil’s choice you need to be careful! So, use your best judgement when it comes to the proportion of your chair and dining table.
