Leroy Street Studio – Shore House
Located at the juncture where a forest opens onto the bay, the Shore House was designed to capture both the intimacy of the wooded site and the expansiveness of the open water. A cut in the earth offers entry to the house followed by a sequence of interior and exterior spaces that slowly open to sweeping views of the bay. Designed for both large family events and as a private retreat, the waterside of the house is wrapped in large glass panels that open to a covered outdoor courtyard. Here a large masonry hearth supports the upper volume and provides a focal point for a sunken seating area. Access to the floating bedrooms and sitting room is by a hidden stair. The language of detailing is both expansive and intimate: exploring the junction between abstract modernism and handcrafted materiality. The Shore House received an AIA New York State Architecture Award, an International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum + The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, and a Society of American Registered Architects | New York Council Design Award of Excellence.

Leroy Street Studio – Dune House
The Dune House is a single-family residence in the town of Southampton, NY. Located in a dune field between the beach and a wetland preserve, the main spaces are positioned on a stone plinth above a considerable flood elevation. To maximize views of the ocean and wetlands, the public living spaces are situated on the upper level while the private areas appear to be nestled in the dunescape on the home’s lower level.

Leroy Street Studio – Oak Grove House
Set on the historic Coral Gables property of the philanthropist, Arthur Vining Davis, this project by Leroy Street Studio takes advantage of the elevated topography and the spectacular, dense collection of pin oak trees that frame views of a dramatic private waterfront inlet. The drama of the landscape running through the interior is heightened by dramatic stacked limestone walls, planters, and enormous stone slab floors that continue outside. The house itself feels as if it is floating– unsupported over 60 feet from one end of the central space to the other. The material palette and formal design of the house were developed in response to the sub-tropical climate. Passive cooling, shade and cross ventilation were important considerations to minimize energy consumption. A unique saw-cut textured stacked stone layup was developed, creating a feeling of integrity and mass throughout the building and landscape. Custom bronze-glazed terra cotta tiles and “baguette” louvres deploy a traditional local material in a modern and innovative form, while custom metal and woodwork pieces, and bespoke rosewood veneer features contribute to the projects unique, crafted quality.

Leroy Street Studio – 90 Morton Street RENDERS
This project by Leroy Street Studio is the adaptive reuse of a 1911 printing factory into a new 30-unit residential building in Manhattan’s far West Village, New York City’s formerly-gritty and bustling international port and leading industrial centre. The massive masonry industrial buildings of this period – over-structured with mighty concrete beams and hefty concrete columns – evolved specifically to handle substantial machinery live loads and featured over-scaled window openings to optimize daylight for workers to reduce lighting demands. Harnessing this simple and authentic history of the building, Leroy Street Studio has juxtaposed the raw original structure with the introduction of layers of refinement seen in natural materials and modern detailing that conveys a sense of understated luxury and timelessness. To celebrate its gritty past, the original column and beam structure are exposed, the substantial wall thickness emphasized, and the original building’s features contrasted with new solid stone and oak detailing.
Leroy Street Studio – DC Townhouse
Deliberately working in counterpoint to a 200-year-old historic townhouse, Leroy Street Studio created an unexpected interior filled with diverse and unique pieces with new custom-designed furnishings. As an interior design company, Leroy Street Studio selected modern finishes and fixtures to create a comfortable modern home within the traditional context. Antiques, like a 1960’s brass and opaline glass chandelier by the iconic Italian designer Gio Ponti, compliment the contemporary interventions by bringing warmth and intimacy.
